AD – Review. I have never been a homesick person and before I came to the UK back in 2005 I spend a year in Switzerland, I always loved travelling and discovering new places. But one thing I very much miss about Germany is the food! Despite travelling back home quite frequently with the children through the year somehow my limited supply of my favourite sweets and snacks never last long enough but thankfully a brand new business started up in London to ease my desire and help me out with my sweet tooth! The German Sweet & Snack Box from Heimat London has my name written all over it and I was very exited to be chosen to be one of the first to try out all the goodies inside!
Heimat London is the brand new venture of Serena and Robert who made the big move from my lovely home county Bavaria to London two years ago, with their 2 children. During lockdown earlier this year they rediscovered how much Heimat means to them whilst living abroad, connecting with friends and family far more often then usual and as we all know food can be a great comfort provider so they started cooking some more German culinary delights like Schweinebraten, Schnitzel and consumed some of their favourite sweets and snacks like Peanut Flips and Ritter Sport Chocolate. Wanting to share the love for their home country they decided to create a well and truly ‘Heimat Feeling in a Box’ with their 4 different German Food Subscription Boxes.
I have received their rather delicious looking German Sweets & Snacks Box to try out, which is packed with a large variety of sweets and savoury snacks from German brands containing 4x sweets, 4x rich and delicious salty snacks as well as 2x original sweets.
Let’s start with the sweet part in my box, there was a Rum & Grape Ritter Sport Chocolate bar (my mums favourite), a 2 pack of crunchy hazelnut chocolate from Hanuta, a Swiss favourite of mine the Toblerone bar, my all-time childhood classic colourful sweet puffed rice x 2 (the second pack didn’t last long enough to be pictured), some refreshing Nimm 2 (Take 2) bonbons and some super soft fruity yogurt gums from Katjes.
And here is one for the savoury snack lovers! This is what was included in my box: a classic Salami Bifi, some Chipsfrisch Hungarian flavoured crisps in a small (for us Germans) snack pack (in England you would say its twice the size of a normal crisps package) x 2, once again my eagerness to taste them prevented me from waiting until I took those pictures, the most delicious peanut snack from Lorenz those peanut butter flavoured locks are just a delight as well as some paprika Chipsletten (they are Pringles shaped but way more flavour to it).
Every box also contains a leaflet about all of the products ingredients. In addition, Heimat London have a dedicated online section for this where they list all the products with their ingredients, which you can check out here.
But Heimat London didn’t stop there, no! They have also created a German Speciality Baking Box which includes ready mix baking boxes, Ingredients, Icing & Puddings. The theme is changing every 4 weeks and right now it’s all about baking at home and making those special German cookies, Streuselkuchen and much more.
If you are living in the London Borough of Richmond, Kingston, Merton and Wandsworth, Heimat London has partnered up with their local German Bakery “Hansel & Pretzel” in Richmond to create a German Speciality Barbecue Box to get you all set for a truly authentic German style BBQ with original, step-by-step recipes and carefully chosen ingredients such as German Sausages, special steaks, Ketchup, mustards, herb butter, german potato salad and freshly baked Pretzel sticks.
And then there is the German Breakfast Box which once again contains freshly baked bread and rolls as well as cold cuts, cheese and savoury spreads everything you need to have a delicious German breakfast on the weekend. (Delivery is only Saturday and Sunday for the above mentioned London Areas.)
Having lived in the UK for 15 years now I am still as exited as on the first day when I find a German sweet by off change in the most random shops, so having a box delivered to your home with all these goodies inside is like Christmas Day for me! Their slogan Heimat Feeling in a Box is just that, bringing a little bit of back home right to your doorstep.
Each Box varies from £24.90 for the Sweet & Snacks to £28.90 for the Baking box (excluding a delivery charge of £3.90) and the fresh Boxes are £34.90 for the Breakfast Box and £39.90 for the BBQ Box. All the boxes (bar the fresh ones) are delivered across Mainland UK within 2-3 days.
Heimat London do have a Subscribe & Save Deal where you can get £5 off each box and you received a brand new box every 4 weeks (you can cancelled the subscription monthly 14 days before another box is due) and each box is aimed for a family of 2 adults and 2 children. You can check out all the info and more over on their Heimat London website.
Although not the cheapest Food Subscription Box around it is the first one where I liked every single item inside, so that alone makes it very well worth the money as a treat for yourself or even as a little gift for a German friend in the UK! I will defiantly be purchasing a box (or a subscription for a few months) again soon!
They also have an ‘In the Kitchen’ section where you can find some pretty yummy looking German recipes to cook at home like this Authentic Vienna Schnitzel, Finn loves a good Schnitzel when we visit Germany so this is one for Mr. C. to try out soon for sure!
