Molly-May’s First Day at School + a German Tradition

Molly-May School

I very much remember my own first day at school in Germany when I was 6 years old back in 1990 the excitement of finally being able to attend school just like my big siblings and of course I finally got my very own “Schultüte” aka School Cone which I couldn’t wait to open once I arrived in my new classroom. It was filled with treats, small gifts and stationary items to use for school! Now that I have kids of my own I felt it was only right to continue this sweet tradition with both my children and now that my youngest one is starting school I made her her very own sugar cone to open up in the morning before school starts!

I have to admit I did cheat a little bit when Finn started school back in 2014 I made his Schultüte from scratch but I couldn’t resist the 30 pence bargain I found at a red cross shop in Germany in the Summer Holidays and it was just the right size for Molly-May (with Finn I went a tad overboard size wise!). I had lots of safari animals printed on it so I decided to get out the arts and crafts box and make it a bit more girly for Molly-May in her favourite colours pink and purple and of course not to forget her favourite animal the unicorn! A traditional Schultüte always has the child’s name and I also added the date of her starting school on the bottom of the cone. I filled the cone with a few toys like a purse, a blind bag, a stamp, new scissors, ruler and pen sharpeners as well as pens and a new toothbrush. I purposely did not include any sweets because I don’t want her to attend her first day at school all high on a sugar rush!

So here she is all dressed up on the morning of her first every day at school with the biggest smile on her face!

Dearest Molly-May:

I can’t believe it’s already time to send you to “big school”!! I know you will have lots of fun with all your friends from Pre-School and some new friends. I have no doubts that your teachers will smile when you sing and dance and you will be eager to please them with all the new tasks who are coming for you for your first ever school year! Just stay as happy as you are and have fun!

Of course from the ten thousand pictures I took there where plenty of outtakes so I thought I share some funny ones too (there are some more pictures on Instagram too):

Do you have a school starter in your house this year too?                                                                If so I hope they will have a great settling in time and enjoy going to school and are as exited as Molly-May has been all the way through the Summer Holidays!!

And if you would like to check out the massive Schultüte which I made for Finn on his first day of school (which was nearly as big as him!) check out my ‘Back to School List‘ post where I have added a picture of him!
