Like Father Like Son – Skateboard Fun!

Father's Day Lifestyle & Gifts Reviews

Mr. C. has been at me to get him a skateboard for quite a few years now and ever since Finn decided to start boarding a couple of months back its been the topic of many conversations. Mr. C. use to skate from age 8 onwards so he was of course delighted to see that Finn was following his path and wanted to share that experience together with his son. So much so that he told me various times that Finn would benefit a lot if he would have a board to show him some tricks and how to ride safely! So when Skates.co.uk got in touch with me to see if I would be interested in reviewing a product for them I couldn’t say no and when I the parcel arrived and Mr. C. opened it and realised that he has been send it was like his Birthday and Christmas wishes all come true at once!

Skates.co.uk are a family owned company from the outskirts of Southampton and have a rather large range of Skateboards, Longboards as well as Scooters ranging from Kids Scooters to high quality Stunt Scooters, Skates and even BMX’s and plenty of Accessories to go with all the products.

Mr. C. got send the green Mindless Longboard Corsair III Longboard and as soon as he unpacked his new board he told me that it reminded him very much of the Old Krytonics he was very fond off in his teens. It has a very vintage looking design and the green wheels and paint job look perfect together:

The Mindless Corsair is the big brother to the Mindless Raider board; it offers a fresh shaping combining both a convex and concave deck. The board also comes with a smooth surf style graphic on the bottom alongside a ply of light bamboo, this layer adds both strength and flex to the board.

The dimension of the long board are 38.25″ x 9.25″ and the 5-ply Hardrock Canadian Maple construction comes with a bottom ply of light bamboo. It has a Convex Profile with a concave and kick tail and the wheels are a Mindless Outlaw 68mm 83A and it costs £79.95.

Despite Mr. C. not being back in sunny Miami where he use to skateboard near the beach when he lived there in his 20s we still made it down the (Bournemouth) Seafront for him to ride his new longboard (and we even got some sunshine too)! Starting up on a slightly steep hill we then got down to the beach where Finn and his Dad went alongside the beach huts on more straight terrae:

After testing his new board I asked Mr. C. to share his thoughts on the skateboard:

“I was very impressed with the Corsair III and have thoroughly enjoyed the smooth ride and surprising ability of the board. The high standard trucks and wheels make the ride easy to handle and with a fine detailed vintage design makes it a very attractive piece of kit. The Headgear is a comfy snug fit with strength to give you the confidence needed to take on the rigours of skateboarding!”

It is of course very important to have the right protection when doing any kind of sports. So we also got send the Dare Sports Skate Helmet which is a helmet especially designed for extreme sport like skateboarding or scooting and unlike a bike helmet a skate helmet has a lower cut shell for more protection on the back of your head:

All Dare Sports Helmets come in Medium (55-58cm) and Large (57-59cm) but you can adjust the sizing with the foam inserts which can be taken out to make it slightly smaller/bigger size wise. We received the Dare Sports Skate Helmet in black but they have 10 other colours to choose from white to bright green there is a colour for everybody’s liking to be found! The Dare Sports Helmet conforms to the British & European Safety Standards and has an affordable price tag of £17.95 and like any other helmet you can customise it quite easily with stickers starting with the free pack of Skates Stickers you receive with it!

The helmet was a very good fit and the matt finish makes it look rather cool! It was very important to me that he wears it at all time I know adults sometimes don’t take safety as serious as they do with their children but I think its important that we lead by example and wear the same important protection then our children when we do a sporty activity together!

By the way Finn’s skateboard in the pictures/video clip is also from Skates.co.uk! Shortly after Mr. C. receiving his new board we decided to treat Finn to an upgrade from his mini skateboard made out of wood which is rather heavy to carry for him and to be honest it is just too small for his age! He gotten 10 out of 10 in his spelling test at school for 4 weeks running now so he was allowed to choose a new board as a special treat. He went for the Krunk Retro 81 Skateboard Cruiser in Purple (because he is a tad Minion obsessed again!). It is a 22.5″ cruiser board and we liked it because it has some chunky sized wheels on it! It rides really smooth and is just the perfect size for him I would defiantly recommend this for any child age 7 and up who wants to start skateboarding I only wish we bought it earlier because he got really frustrated with his old board not being flexible enough to ride!
He first wanted the Osprey Retro Cruiser board but unfortunately after ordering we received an email shortly after that there are supply issues so they canceled my order for me and I reorder Finn’s 2. choice board within minutes! It arrived within 2 days of ordering and I received an email from Yodel letting me know that it is out for delivery on the day it arrived.
Because it is rather hard to capture the full functuallity of a skateboard with pictures alone I put together a little clip with some snippets of our Skateboarding afternoon out for you to check out! I think for some amateurs Mr. C. (who hasn’t been on a board in some time!) and Finn did really well and as they say practice makes perfect overtime! Enjoy:

With all your orders over £40 on Skates.co.uk you receive FREE UK next day Delivery (Mon-Fri) with an 1 hour delivery window when placing your order before 5pm weekdays. Skates.co.uk are very passionate about offering their customers the best possible price on any product. They try to be as competitive as possible but, if you do manage to find a product for less somewhere else, they will always try to match the price!

Disclaimer: I have been sent Mindless Corsair Longboard as well as the Dare Sports Skate Helmet from Skates.co.uk for reviewing purposes, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
