Easy DIY Ghostbusters Kids Costumes!

Fancy Dress Costumes

Once the theme for Finn’s 7th Birthday Party was nailed down I was straight on the web to find some costumes for both Finn and Molly-May to wear but all I got was either way above £25 per costume or made out of thin polyester with printed on features. I also looked into hiring some fancy dress costume but could only find that service for adults so I decided to make one “from scratch” instead.

For Finn I purchased a white boiler suit from Amazon in size 6/7 (28inch) for £11.99 after reading the reviews that it’s coming up big I went for a size smaller than I usually buy him. I also purchased some Dylon Machine Dye in Pebble Beige (again from Amazon) for £6.41 (after doing some research via google I discovered that this is the most used colour for making a Ghostbusters costume, FYI I used the whole package to dye it) and a Ghostbusters Logo Patch for £1.38 from PatchWOW on Amazon unfortunately when it arrived it looked nothing like the picture so it was no use for me and I made an emergency purchase from the super friendly and helpful Ebay Seller ellultd who came to my rescue 2 days before the party and made an extra trip to the postoffice to send it off 1st class for it to arrive in time to stitch it onto his costume:

The finishing touch came with the personalised name badge from the Ebay seller patch_me_up for £3.95 with Finn’s last name to make the costume more authentic!

For Molly-May’s dress I sourced Ebay and found this beige NEXT dress in a size Age 4 (so more 3-4 years) for only £6 (all in) and stitched another Ghostbusters Logo Patch onto the front of the dress:

For some cheaper alternatives or as an extra for under the costumes I purchased 2 Iron On T-Shirt Transfers a A5 sized Ecto 1 design (£2.21) for Finn and a small A6 Ghostbusters logo (2.12£) for MM to iron on a plain white t-shirt:

As an extra I also made the kids some personalised Ghostbusters Proton permits which also doubled up as a goody bag item for all the kids to take home with a lanyard and a clear I.D. case from Ebay.

So overall I spend £24 on Finn’s Costume and £8.49 on Molly-May’s they might not be perfect (Finn’s Boiler Suit could have done with a 2. dye job to get it a bit darker) but the kids absolutely loved them thats what counts!

Have you made some DIY Costumes for your kids for a party? If so what was your favourite make?

What would be the equivalent of a “boiler suit” in the US? 🙂 I can’t find anything like that in kids sizes!

I would say overalls or coveralls? I hope that helps and you manage to find some in the US!
