I wanted to keep a little diary of what words & sentences he learnt over the last 7 weeks for me and him to look back when he is older so here it goes (these are only snippets i am sure i forgot the half of it):
Week 1:
Kuckuck – cuckoo
Bagger – digger
Schieber – grafter
Gabelstapler – fork truck
Week 2:
Lastwagen – Truck
Gemma wieda weiter aba schnell – Let’s go again, but quickly (a German phrase of a song they learned for a dance around the May Tree)
Grüß Gott – A Bavarian word for hello which we say daily when we go for a walk and meet another person in German villages it is polite to say hello to everybody you walk by
Eigendlich – actually
Donnerstag – Thursday (his new favourite word if you ask him what day it is)
Week 3:
Scheisserla – (the bavarian word for) Poo
Ich liebe dich auch – I love you too (he actually has been saying Ich liebe dich for ages but the ‘auch’ is a new one to be added on)
Grasshüpfer – Grasshopper
Week 4:
He loves asking us what day of the week it is because he is learning it in the Kindergarden
He now started talking German with English words for example: “Ich will den train mama”( I want this train mummy)
Heuschrecke – grasshopper
Kochlöffel – wooden spoon
Männchen – manikin
(Above words are probably related to his new Play mobile Pirate Ship he got given this week)
Week 5:
He comes out with sentences like:
Mama gehts dir gut? – Mummy are you ok?
I don’t mag butter – I don’t like butter
They other day Opa was off to Tennis and Finn just shouted after Opa came back into the living room because he forgot to say something:
Tschüs dann – Alright Bye Bye then
Week 6:
Ich mag das – I want to have this
Ich will das – I want this
Mir gefällt – I really like this
Week 7 :
By the last week i couldn’t carry on remembering what exactly he’s saying but he is talking 70% german and most german sentences have at least 1 or 2 words of English in them.
After the Holiday:
Now that we have been back to England for just under 2 weeks he is slowly starting to use more English words again.
In the first week he was picked up by my neighbour from nursery because us girls went to BritMums and he refused to speak a word of English so her son had to ask the mum (who is a teacher and understands German a bit) what he is talking about.
Later he went to my cousins house who is half German and understands everything so she was happy to mostly answer him back in German all weekend.
